Box-spring bed or regular bed: What's the difference?
A box spring bed offers double cushioning: A box with its own spring core usually supports a spring mattress, and a topper is often placed on top. A standard bed supports the mattress on a slatted frame. According to Stiftung Warentest, a box spring bed isn’t necessarily more comfortable—but its height, appearance, and upholstery are definite pluses.
In short
- Higher at the entry level. The box-spring beds tested by Stiftung Warentest were 56 to 69 cm high; standard beds are often significantly lower.
- The mattress can be replaced. If your mattress is worn out, you can replace it—without having to dispose of the box—with the Boxspring Comfort, for example.
- Cold foam is also an option. If the product page specifies it, the box will also contain a cold foam mattress.
- A mattress topper isn't a must. According to the test, you can sleep comfortably with or without one.
What is a box spring bed, and how is it constructed?
A bed consisting of three layers: At the bottom is the box spring—a box on legs with its own spring core, often covered in fabric or faux leather. On top of that is usually a spring mattress, and often a topper is added as the top layer. A padded headboard is typical.
A standard bed has a slatted frame instead of a box spring, and the mattress rests on the slatted frame.
The Alba box spring bed from Hasena shows what a bed from the store looks like: The box is 18 cm high and features 176 Bonell springs per 100 × 200 cm. On top of that is a mattress with a barrel-shaped pocket spring core and 390 springs, topped with a 7- to 8-cm-thick topper that you choose to go with the bed.
The two types of springs provide different levels of support: Bonell springs are interconnected, while in a pocket spring core, each spring is enclosed in its own pocket.
Box-spring bed or bed with a slatted frame: What's the difference?
You can't get a better night's sleep in a box spring bed: In a test conducted by Stiftung Warentest, the nine box spring beds scored, on average, lower than the standard mattresses in their 2025 test program. They differ significantly in height, appearance, and price.
According to the testers, a springy base is not a prerequisite for a good night’s sleep: they test every mattress on a firm surface. Under a good mattress, a simple, preferably rigid slatted frame is sufficient, and its most important function is to allow the mattress to breathe.
Other differences between the two systems:
| Feature | Box-spring bed | Bed with a slatted frame |
|---|---|---|
| Reclining | In tests, they performed less well on average than basic mattresses. | A good mattress performs well even on a rigid box spring. |
| Height | In the test, it was 56 to 69 cm tall. | Often significantly lower, but also higher at a “comfortable height.” |
| Shelf Life | It can last a long time or develop pits early on. | Likewise, the slatted frame usually lasts longer than the mattress. |
| Mattress | It can be replaced without having to throw away the box. | It can be replaced, but the rust remains. |
| Price | In tests, it is often more expensive than the mattress, bed frame, and slats combined. | According to the test, it often offers the best value for the money. |
| Appearance | A typical feature is the padded headrest for leaning against. | Depending on the bed frame; both are available with under-bed storage. |
What the test says: Stiftung Warentest tested nine entry-level box-spring beds measuring 140 × 200 cm. The only way to know how a bed feels is to try it out.
According to the testers, the appeal of a box spring bed lies in its appearance and upholstery, and they describe its height as comfortable, “for example, for people with back pain.” The upholstered headboard, which you can lean against while reading, is a matter of personal taste.

What is a box spring mattress?
Usually the mattress that sits on top of the box spring: a spring mattress that you can replace without having to dispose of the box spring.
The name alone isn't protected, so take a close look at what's being offered. A box-spring mattress can also be placed on a regular bed: This way, you get the comfort of a box-spring bed without having to put a bulky bed in your bedroom, and the mattress costs less than a whole bed. If you want to try it out first, buy the mattress and then the bed later.
The Boxspring Comfort is designed to replace older box spring mattresses and, according to the product page, also fits on classic slatted bases: Beneath 30 mm of hybrid foam lies a 16 cm-high barrel-shaped pocket spring core with approximately 500 springs; the mattress is about 24 cm high. Additional models in this line can be found under “Box Spring Mattresses.”

Does a box spring bed need a topper?
No, a topper isn't a must: Stiftung Warentest compared box-spring beds with and without toppers, and both were comfortable to sleep on. Deep body indentations formed with or without a topper.
Many box-spring beds still come with a topper. With the Alba from Hasena, the topper determines the feel of the sleeping surface: You can choose from three options—firm, medium, or medium to soft—and its cover is removable and machine-washable up to 40 °C, whereas the box cover is not.

Who should consider a box spring bed?
For anyone who thinks height, appearance, and padding are worth the extra cost: According to Stiftung Warentest, those who want a comfortable place to sleep at an affordable price are often better off with a mattress on a bed with a slatted frame.
- You like to sleep high up: A box spring bed is usually higher. With the Alba from Hasena, the box spring with legs measures 33 cm, and the mattress and topper are added on top of that.
- You like to lean against it: The padded headboard is a hallmark of a box spring bed.
- You need storage space: Both systems come with a bed storage compartment; the Alba model features a flip-up storage area under the sleeping surface.
- You weigh more: What matters is the model's weight limit. According to the product page, the Alba can support up to 350 kg, including bedding, while the Massive Deluxe in H4 can support up to 150 kg.
- If you already have a box spring bed, just replace the worn-out mattress.
- Above all, you want a comfortable place to sleep that won't break the bank: a good mattress on a firm slatted frame.

Conclusion
A box spring bed supports the mattress on a spring-loaded box, making it higher off the ground, while a standard bed supports it on a slatted frame. In both cases, the mattress is what determines how well you sleep. Choose a box spring bed for its height, appearance, and upholstery, and if you already have a bed, just replace the mattress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a spring mattress fit on an adjustable slatted frame?
Only to a limited extent: According to the Austrian Association for Consumer Information, a slightly raised head or foot end is not a problem, but only a few models can raise the head end to a sitting position. According to Stiftung Warentest, flexible foam or latex mattresses are best suited for adjustable bed bases. You can check the product page to see if a model is designed for this purpose.
Which slatted base works best with a spring mattress?
A simple one that’s as rigid as possible: In a Stiftung Warentest study, spring-based bed bases did not improve the comfort of lying on the mattresses, and a slatted bed base lasts significantly longer than a mattress.
