Sleep Cooler: How to Adjust Your Bed for Warm Nights

Do you get too hot at night? It’s rarely just the mattress that’s to blame. The mattress topper, comforter, pillows, and bedding all work together to affect the temperature. Here’s a look at what each layer contributes and which materials work best, so you can make targeted changes instead of replacing everything at once.

Overview

Four layers, four adjustment screws.

Your bed consists of layers that conduct heat and moisture differently: the mattress directly beneath you, the comforter above you, the pillow under your head, and the bedding in between. If you want to sleep cooler, you don’t have to buy everything new: Usually, it’s enough to change the layer that traps the most heat.

Procedure

Here's how to proceed, step by step.

1

Start with the sleeping surface

Most of the heat is generated right beneath you, because that's where your body makes contact with the mattress over a large area. A cooling pad or a breathable topper alters this very layer without requiring you to replace the mattress.

2

Choose a Duvet Suited to the Season

A lightweight summer comforter with a plant-based filling retains significantly less heat than an all-season comforter. Having two comforters—one for summer and one for winter—is usually the simplest solution.

3

Replace pillows and bedding

The head and neck are sensitive to heat. A pillow with a breathable filling and smooth covers made of cotton or Lyocell completes the transition.

One layer at a time: That's how you'll figure out what works.

Sleeping surface

Mattress and topper: the layer right beneath you.

This is where you get the most impact with the least effort. A mattress topper goes on top of your existing mattress and can be removed at any time or changed seasonally.

How much of a difference you notice depends on the room temperature, the bedding, and your own personal preference. In the showroom, you can try out both versions side by side.

Duvet

Herbal fillings for warm nights.

The filling is the main factor that determines how much heat is retained and how much moisture is released. We carry these three fillings for lightweight styles.

Lyocell

OriginCellulose fiber derived from wood, smooth fiber surface
StarchAbsorbs moisture and releases it into the surrounding air
This is a good choice ifyou're looking for a smooth, lightweight comforter for warm nights

kapok

OriginSeed fibers from the kapok tree; hollow and very light
StarchLightweight yet airy, a plant-based alternative to down
This is a good fit ifyou prefer a lightweight duvet to a heavy, cozy one

Hemp

OriginA bast fiber from the hemp plant, sturdy and denser than kapok
StrengthAbsorbs a lot of moisture and feels noticeably stable
This is a good fit ifyou like a plant-based duvet that’s a little heavier

Pillow

Keep your head and neck cool.

A pillow is small, but it rests directly against your head and neck. That's where you feel warmth especially quickly. The filling and cover can be replaced separately.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleeping Cooler.

What are the benefits of a cooling mattress topper?

It replaces the top layer of your bed: Instead of lying directly on the mattress cover, you lie on a fabric designed to keep you cooler. How much you notice this depends on the room temperature, your bedding, and your personal sensitivity.

Do I need a second comforter for the summer?

Two duvets are the simplest solution: a lightweight one for the warmer months and a warmer one for winter. Alternatively, there are two-piece all-season models that you can separate in the summer.

Is it enough to just change the pillowcase?

This is often a good first step because the cover fits directly over your head and neck and can be changed without needing a new pillow. If you find the filling itself too warm, it’s worth checking out Lyocell, kapok, or latex flakes.

What kind of bedding is best for me if I tend to get hot easily?

Smooth fabrics made of cotton or Lyocell. Both absorb moisture; Lyocell also feels smooth and cool to the touch. Details on washing temperature and drying instructions are listed on the care label.

Can I try this out before I buy it?

Yes. At our showrooms in Volketswil and Dagmersellen, you can compare mattresses, mattress toppers, and pillows side by side and get advice. The appointment is free and there’s no obligation.
